They seem to be getting weirder recently. When it first started I usually got pretty normal words, but now I never do.

yeah, me too

they are actually starting to piss me off now. Because, even if some look weird, half of them arent actual words, or spelling mistakes or just plain obscure, which makes it annoying. Its supposed to be hard to decipher, not to understand!

i know it is a bit lenient in that it will let 1/2 mistakes fly, but still...

Dunno how many people know, but when reCaptcha was acquired by Google, they decided to tie in their own OCR (Optical Character Recognition) system to the mix. Basically, when Google scans a book or bit of text and comes across a word it doesn't instantly recognise with a certain degree of accuracy, it adds it to a "wtf" table. That table is then used to generate additional words for Captcha forms (with the other word selected from Google's scanned & verified words table).

Basically, Google's using human processing to improve it's OCR tables. If enough humans come up with the same suggestion for the unknown word AND answer the known word correctly, they use that as the real answer and stick that into their 'known' word database.

Cool, huh? Basically, that's why there are so many stupid/weird/crazy words and/or characters appearing in reCaptcha forms.
