Re: Hijackthis log

Unfortunately due to lack of time myself and lack of help from elsewhere, I won't be doing any "HiJackThis" log section for the Bushtarion forums.

However, there are some forums that are actually dedicated to HiJackThis, full of useful stickied guides/announcements that should definitely be read first... such as:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/securit ... -log-help/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum22.html
A tutorial on how to read a HiJackThisLog:
http://www.castlecops.com/HijackThis.html
And a tool that analyses hijackthis logs online and will tell you if any "relatively well known" spyware exists:
http://www.prevx.com/hijackthis.asp
(note on the tool: It doesn't do things like tell you about stuff that isn't dangerous, but is totally not needed and can be removed... which usually people analysing logs will helpfully tell you or you can discover yourself by self-analysing as below)

You can also become very adept and pretty quick at solving logs yourself (and I really recommend you do, you'll start to become good at spotting other problems like lightning), by the simple process of Googling each individual item you see in your hijackthislog one at a time, checking the first few Google results and seeing what you can find other people saying about the files, eg for your log you'd first search for "smss.exe" and then "winlogon.exe" etc. - I can tell you from experience though that those two are quite safe, but if you look them up you can find out what it is they actually do! :D

Also as a general rule of thumb, the best way to fix a computer of spyware is;
* Download & install Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Avast anti-virus (if you don't already have an anti-virus app that is).
* Load them and go in to their own individual "Updaters" so they are all up to date but don't run any scans yet!
* BOOT IN TO SAFE MODE (essential step lazy people think they can skip not realising how important this is)
* On the login screen for safe mode, select your usual user account not the administrator account (though sometimes doing the opposite can fix particular spyware so if you have time, do the following process for each user)
* Now, one by one, manually load up the applications you just installed and updated before from within safe mode, and run full scans on them all. Close each program after scanning before moving on to the next scanner, and don't attempt to run them all at once.
* Boot back in to normal mode.

For the majority of spyware/popup causers etc., this will fix them. For the rest, hijackthis and Google everything in your logfile until you find a particular virus/spyware, and look up individual instructions for that particular problem by googling "<spyware/virus name> removal".

Hope you don't take my encouragement of self-help as an alternative for blowing you off, that would just be me ignoring the thread!!! :p
