Girl, eight, found hanged at home

An eight-year-old girl has been found hanged in her bedroom at a house in Nottinghamshire, police said.

The child was found at her home in Moor Street, Mansfield, on Saturday morning. Nottinghamshire Police's Public Protection Unit is investigating.

A five-year-old boy also living at the address has been taken into local authority care.

Police said no-one had been arrested but the girl's parents were interviewed under caution.

'Investigating circumstances'

A post-mortem examination was was carried out at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Specialist police officers are working with social services to find out how the incident happened. Police were called at 0915 BST on Saturday.

Det Supt Adrian Pearson, head of Nottinghamshire Police's Public Protection Unit, said: "We are investigating the full circumstances of this death with our colleagues at children and young people's services.

"The inquiry is at a very early stage, and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at present."

Moor Street has now reopened following a full forensic examination of the scene, police added.

no way she killed herself though Cyrus, i could easily be wrong but the logistics of it dont sound right

what possible thing could drive an 8yr old too suicide unless she was being abused or sumthin then it still is the parents fault

anyway its quite saddening if she took suicide, not gettin too grow up not having a life

Perhaps she was acting something out she saw on the TV and it went horribly wrong?

"Awareness of suicide in elementary children is very low. These children easily slip below the radar of adults. And when the actions of a small child result in death, they are often labeled an accident. The mind doesn't want to even entertain the slight possibility that a small child would want to die

Only 4 children out of 500,000 commit suicide annually under the age of 12. This information comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While this number seems very small and not of great concern, this number has doubled since 1979.

Police and doctors tend to label many suicides as "accidents" to spare the family the dark cloud that accompanies a suicide. Society is quick to blame parents and teachers when a suicide is not prevented. Someone should have done something. Someone should have seen this coming. The facts are that the signs can be very subtle. Who hasn't had a grumpy 10-year-old or a child that feels blue after grandma died? It is difficult to discern what is normal from what is not. And, the unfortunate reality is that if someone truly wants to end their life, you can not supervise them every minute to prevent it.

Studies have been done showing that general practitioners miss childhood depression at a rate of 80-90%.

Childhood suicide does exist and it is increasing."

Just some food for thought before everyone jumps on a "lynch the parents" bandwagon. A friend of mine attempted suicide at school when we were 9 years old. It can and does happen, and it's not always the parents fault. Children are just as capable of having mental disorders as teenagers and adults.

I have an 11 year old in one of my current classes this year. Everyday after school, a van comes to pick her up and return her to the hospital. Last year (she was not enrolled at our school) she had 5 suicide attempts.

Sometimes, sheltered people just don't have a clue- and sometimes life is a lot more tolerable when you are clueless. There are days where I think its a miracle that any of my students can focus on a lesson after hearing about their home lives.

If you have a good home, be thankful.

Why was an eight year old at home alone in the first place? i know it may not have prevented anything, but if she was acting out something she saw, she may not have dared do it with mum and dad home. And then where did she see someone hang themselves? An 8yo doesnt come up with that kind of thing by themselves, and that **** aint on kids shows

I hate it when i hear about stuff like this :(

Why wouldn't an eight year old be at home on their own? Were your parents with you every second of every day until your 18th birthday?

Just accept that sometimes **** things happen. It isn't necessarily the parents' fault, or TV's fault, or George Bush's fault. Maybe she was just a kid who did something stupid and it went wrong.
