I run Avast! 4.8 Home Edition (free version), it just sits there in the background doing it's thing. Am I right in saying that I dont need to run a virus check? I want to but cant find anything that lets me, so I assume it does it all the time, but somehow I dont think that's right.

When I double click on the icon it just brings up the on-access scanner to show which items it has running, they are all active.

You should really run virus checks every now and again - but Avast (and most other AV programs) have "on access" scanners, that scan the contents of folders as and when you open them up.

I disable this function as its a bit of a drain on resources (I prefer to manually scan files I suspect may be a threat).

Other than that, atsan is on the money.

Tbh DA I thought that was the case, but my laptop shut itself down yesterday due to a "potential threat". I was worried that because I'd not run a virus check for a while that there might have been a problem so wanted to run a scan to be sure.
