having shopped around for the right pronunciation, i've found that it is 'ka-bal'... a higher tone than 'ball'

ka as in caffeine. not the heavy inflection of car.

It's a short opening syllable followed by a longer closing syllable.

k'-barl is how I'd write it phonetically, but I'll find the official phonetics....
