Dreams crushed.

There arnt really any tick based games around anymore. The genre isnt seen on the app store - is there a window of opportunity :O

In theory yes... Problem is, what would've previous been implemented as a Tick based game, is now a 'timer' based live game.
Eg: I tried this the other week: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=zombie.survival.craft.z&hl=en (don't bother downloading it, brilliant concept implemented terribly).
Where it's live with regards to other players interactions, but it takes X minutes to travel to other places, and therefore gives the server time to process events in a spread out manner, rather than having a peak of activity that could bring the gaming server down.
It also means that the 'ticks' are replaced with a more personal 'timer' that from a user experience perspective, is more likely to grab their attention, rather than being forced to make decisions on an external clock. (It also allows the game makers an income stream by allowing players to pay to skip the timers...)

I honestly think given the power of servers now to handle high loads and fast computational power, the concept of a tick based game, over live timer based ones, may very well die out.
