Calling Linux Gurus

Anyone in the house know enough about linux to help me install it onto an Asus R2H umpc. 900mhz centrino. 1.25gb ram, 60gbhd. you can find out the rest of the spec's online.

it has touchscreen, fingerprint reader etc.

wifi, bluetooth.

I want to see how much I can make it bang compared to current xp install.

I had a quick google the other day, but hadn't been able to post on here.

Seems you can just install linux on it as if it was a normal computer. I recommend using Ubuntu Linux, just click the logo in my sig. Burn the .iso to a blank CD-R, boot up using that CD and follow the instructions. Not too sure how much of your hardware you'll be able to use straight off, but if you google "Asus R2H umpc Ubuntu" then you should be able to get some web pages on how to install it.

cheers mark, i'll have a go over christmas, i'm taking linux on a self booting dvd to centre parcs monday and will play around with it, see what i can get working etc.

np, if you have a powerful enough system with plenty of disk space, you could try out linux without the fear of destroying anything on your computer if you download MS Virtual PC or vmware server (both free downloads) and install linux in a virtual machine before you try it on your tablet.

You can also download a "LiveCD" version of Ubuntu. You write this to a CD, and this is then a version of the OS that runs purely off a CD, so you can see whether you like it or not.

Just remember most of the time you have to download patches if you want to play full screen games like counter strike or half life. They shouldn't be to hard to find, but they can be annoying and buggy.

Well I can't seem to get unbuntu working on my asus, I tried running it from a cd / dvd, still no joy, I will try a different type of linux next week me thinks.

The other alternative was to try and get hold of embedded XP, which I believe has much more stripped down, and runs a lot quicker, but again I need to find a source for this.

I know that this r2h has the potential to be a little power engine with its 900mhz centrino and 1.25gb ram. Just finding the right OS to utilise it.

Another nice, easy to install linux distro is Fedora, http://fedoraproject.org/

I just installed it earlier today after Ubuntu didn't seem to like my ATI video card. I still haven't gotten this one to run well on my Dell Dimension E521 ( something wrong with the motherboard and USB slots not refreshing leaves the mouse/keyboard inoperable after 5-10 minutes ) I'm about to test it out on my other box.
